December 2010

Dear Ohio Amish Country Enthusiast,

We at Experience Ohio Amish Country would like to extend to all of our faithful Ohio Amish Country Experiences subscribers a heartfealt Merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy and wonderful new year!

It's so hard to believe that 2010 has come and already nearly gone. Seems like just a few weeks ago we were writing about winter coming to an end and the beauty of spring coming upon us.

The older we get the faster time seems to go - one season blurs into the next and one year blends into another before we've had time to fully experience and appreciate the moments.

Whether Amish or "English" in culture we all share the same sense of mortality and the same cycles and seasons of life.

And now, here we are busily getting ready for Christmas and anticipating another new year.

We must say, our weather here in northeast Ohio has been wonderful. Holmes County had just enough snow one time to say so - and to allow a few snowmen to be constructed. But it didn't stay long.

Here in extreme northeast Ohio, where we are buffered by Lake Erie, we had a couple "spits" of snow in the air with not much showing on the ground.

For the most part, it's not even going below freezing every night. We've had some frosty mornings, but the temperature rises into the upper 40's and mid 50's during the day.

So, for now, we can't complain. The trees are bare, the leaves are gone - but the snow has yet to arrive! I'm sure we'll be "in for it" when it finally does hit.

Winter may not be our most "favorite" season but it does host our most favorite event - the Advent!

And Christmas time is no exception in Ohio Amish Country. There's lots to do, see and experience this time of year. There are special opportunities, activities and sales events.

So, as usual, we extend an invitation for you to come experience Ohio Amish Country at this wonderful time of year!

Don't forget, if you need a little gift for a "fellow Amish Country fanatic" consider giving them an Amish Country map!

In this issue we'll be highlighting:

The Swiss Village Bulk Food Store

A favorite destination of ours in the Village of Sugarcreek (in Tuscarawas County) is actually just south of the downtown area.

It is the Swiss Village Bulk Food Store and is located at 309 South Broadway Street in Sugarcreek, Ohio.

Their name only partially reveals their offerings. With over 6000 product items, bulk food is just a small part of all they have. They also sell the standard sundries of a small corner grocery store along with health foods, natural and organic foods.

They have a line of Amish canned goods for sale and feature over 50 different cheeses along with meats and deli items.

Alongside the deli, they have a small café with some inexpensive but great tasting sandwiches and ice cream. Their portions are generous and the food is fresh.

Recently, they've made an effort to stock more natural foods with wholesome ingredients in place of the highly processed foods with all the "synthetic" additives.

Trying to be health conscious? This is a must stop for you. They even have bulk, raw honey and freshly-ground, natural peanut butter!

Celebrate Christmas in Ohio Amish Country!

Tis the Season Christmas Shoppe in Berlin, Ohio

Like any holiday, things are not open in Amish Country on the actual day of December 25th. However, the days before and after (except Sunday, of course) are business as usual.

Since Christmas is always such a beautiful time of year and since Ohio Amish Country is always a great place to visit, why not combine the two?

With flea markets and antique malls along with hundreds of quaint "mom & pop" shops you can't go wrong. Enjoy a day or more of the "shop till you drop" routine and then come "home" to the beautiful serene accommodations found only in Amish Country.

Relax and reflect upon the meaning of this special season in a place where life is just slower and simpler by nature!
