Trail - Home of the Real Bologna

I remember having Trail Bologna as a kid at my grandparent's house. It was great tasting - especially with lots of yellow mustard! I never gave it much thought as to where it got its name though.

It conjured up ideas of some Old-West trek by horse across the dangerous wilderness. I had visions of eating around a campfire by some old chuck wagon. Wow, was I wrong! While driving the scenic byways of Holmes County, we saw a couple of signs and an old country store. In a quaint little village just north of Walnut Creek, we found the origin of Troyer’s Genuine Trail Bologna.

Named after a village that is too small to have a zip code of its own, the Troyer family has been making their quality wood-smoked product here for four generations.

Starting in 1912, Michael Troyer created a unique blend of special seasonings to make his now famous all-beef bologna. The family continues the tradition of excellence to this day by making literally tons of the savory treat daily.

Though obviously no longer hand-stuffed, modern production methods have not altered the quality. It continues to be authentically wood-smoked for the same old fashioned good taste.

They are located at 6530 Rt. 515. Their phone number is 330- 893-2407. The store is open Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday till 4:00 p.m. They do have winter hours though from January through March.

So, stop by the old country store and get some "good eatin" to take home, you’ll not be sorry—and don’t forget the mustard!

Then, be sure to check out Vogt General Store. Established back in 1888, they sell primtive antiques and collectibles. They're located at 6501 SR 515.

Hours are 8:00 am - 5 pm Monday - Saturday. Stop by or call 330-893-2544 for more information.
