Interstate 77 runs north and south through the heart of Tuscarawas County. Scenic State Route 39 runs east and west. These make it easier to access the county's many attractions than to spell or pronounce its name.

There is a host of events and activities to do while traveling around this area. History runs deep and strong here.

Amish Country

Of course our personal Tuscarawas County favorite is the Swiss and Amish culture of Sugarcreek and its surrounding area. Experience the Swiss flavor—from cheese to architecture! See firsthand how the Amish live and survive. Shop, dine, relax. Spend a night or a weekend.

Ohio Historical Areas

In addition to this, we suggest you stop at Fort Laurens State Memorial. It honors Ohio's only Revolutionary War Fort built in 1778.

Take a tour of the Zoar Village founded by German separatists in 1817. The historic district features restored private homes, shops, restaurants, and ten buildings.

You must visit Ohio's first settlement, historic Schoenbrunn Village founded in 1772 by the Moravians. Watch Ohio's longest running outdoor drama, "Trumpet in the Land," in the Schoenbrunn Amphitheatre.

Tour Gnadenhutten, Ohio's oldest existing settlement. Learn about the tragic massacre that took place there.

Don't miss Warther Carvings in Dover. This family-owned museum and gardens has numerous displays of incredible hand carvings of Ernest "Mooney" Warther, detailing the history of the Steam Locomotive.

Love trains? You'll want to visit Dennison and its historic Railroad Depot Museum. Learn why it is nicknamed "Dreamsville" and why its location was so important. Be sure to see the Dennison Depot Salvation Army Servicemen's Canteen Room and don't miss the shops - ice cream anyone?

In southwestern Tuskarawas County, along the river, see what was once the capital of the Delaware Indian nation. Now home of three annual festivals and events, Newcomerstown brings history to life!

The County Seat

Be sure to spend some time in New Philadelphia. Shop the historic downtown and sample the local cuisine. Like antiques? You'll want to search all 84,000 square feet of the Riverfront Antique Malls.
