Experience Amish Cheese

If you're a cheese connoisseur, the tastes of Amish cheese are a "must experience." We say tastes because there are well over 50 different flavors of cheese actually made in Ohio Amish Country!

And we'll tell you where you can go to taste samples of all of them. Try Ohio-famous Swiss cheese or even yogurt cheese. Watch it being made and be sure to take some home with you.

Cheesemaking is an art carried to this country with the first Swiss and German immigrants. The tradition survives with artisan-made cheese from traditional recipes that will please even the most discriminating pallet.

Cheesemaking is one of the earliest industries to come to this country. Ohio Amish Country is one of the places where it all started - and continues to this day!

The cheese industry is a natural fit for the Amish. It not only provides a market for milk from Amish dairy farms, but also provides employment for many of the Amish because of their knowledge and skill in the trade.

Some of the companies specialize in hormone-free all-natural amish cheese. You are assured that only the best ingredients from pesticide-free milk is used to make the highest quality product.

These producers still collect the milk in cans from Amish farms where every can is numbered. The milk is tested and can be traced back to its source - from the exact farm, to the very cow from which it came!

This simple quality control system keeps any contaminated milk from entering the supply chain while allowing the Amish to maintain their distinctive ways and farming methods.

Consider taking a day and go on a cheesemaking tour. Visit the various facilities where you can see cheese made, try samples and get some to go. Enjoy the beautiful countryside while you do!

We've compiled a list of cheese producers and included a couple of retailers. While most of the production facilities sell their cheese, there are some shops where cheese can be sampled and purchased that do not actually make the cheese themselves.

Can't get out this way to take a tour just yet? Then you might want to enjoy this video of cheese making compliments of Guggisberg Cheese!
