Mesopotamia, with its nearly 2000 Amish, is a quaint historic community named for its location "between two rivers." These rivers being the Grand River and the Cuyahoga River.

Mespo (as it is often called) is located on the western edge of Trumbull County. It is not large enough to have its own zip code so all of the addresses in the area have the Middlefield zip code.

This may create some confusion and difficulty when locating establishments by address since the towns are actually in different counties.

The Commons

The beauty of the village can be found in its Commons and the century-old homes and buildings that surround it.

You can't miss the General Store in continuous use since it was built back in 1840. Beside it, restored to its original luster, is the Mesopo Filling Station dating back to 1940.

The End of the Commons General Store is a unique, family owned and operated, old-fashioned general store.

They feature bulk foods, spices, candies, pastas, Trail Bologna, cheeses, meats, hand-dipped ice cream and real penny candy. They also sell Amish collectibles and gifts.

You won't want to miss relics from the past. See their old grocery items, barber chair, scales, cash register, cabinets, post office, original wood floors and even a functioning player piano!

Located at 8719 State Route 534 at the junction of 534 and Route 87, they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

They've recently added a rather "large tribute" to the horse and buggy lifestyle that represents the slower pace of life that folks have come to appreciate about the area.

Salvage Stores

Another business springing up in recent years that has become quite popular among Amish and English alike is the "Salvage Store."

These salvage stores specialize mainly in salvage groceries though they also carry an assorted selection of various other items including some bulk foods.

Heritage Days

If you want to see history in action be sure to stop by the town hall for Mesopotamia's annual Fall Heritage Days. Usually held the first Saturday of October, they host local Amish craftsmen and Yankee artisans with rug weaving, apple butter making, blacksmithing, leather working, soap making and quilting. Also featured are a vintage car show and a gigantic Amish bake sale with fried pies and homemade ice cream.
