Ohio Amish Country Experiences Volume 02 May 2010
Dear Ohio Amish Country Enthusiast, Folks in Northeast Ohio like to joke about the weather. They say that if you don't like it - wait about five minutes and it will change! And change it has. Overall, spring has been rather nice weather this year. Temperatures have been a little on the cool side but we managed to hit 80° one day and then shortly after had a heavy frost in the morning.
We've not had a lot of "April showers" - the Almanac is predicting dry conditions in the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes region through the summer. So far, for the Amish, this has not been a problem. There's much to do, so they are taking advantage of the dry ground and are plowing up the sod to get ready for spring planting.
What a sight to see the different horse and plow teams turning under the green grass, disking and breaking up clods to make ready for corn, oats, hay and various other crops. Hopefully, the weather will continue to cooperate and they'll get enough rain - after the planting is done - to make the crops grow. As the landscape changes, the trees begin filling out and the many varieties of flowering trees and plants display their beauty, you will not want to miss out on any of it!
It will be gone before you know it, so plan to visit now - and then come again in a few weeks and you'll be amazed at the difference! I know we've said it before, but it just bears repeating: There is no bad time to experience Ohio Amish Country. Each season, every month, even week to week there's a uniqueness that just keeps you coming back for more! _________________________________________________________________ In this issue we'll be highlighting . . . 1. Our Featured Establishment of the Month - Lehman's 2. The Tip of the Month - Fishing for Steel! 3. May Events - Find out what's happening - where and when in Ohio Amish Country. _________________________________________________________________ Featured Establishment of the MonthLehman's
Lehman's - located on the square in Kidron, Ohio is probably one of the most unique shopping experiences you'll ever have. They started out as a hardware & appliance store along with a SOHIO gas station back in 1955. Still family owned and operated, much has changed and yet much has remained the same. They are still a hardware and appliance store and they still sell many of the same things they did back in 1955.
They cater to the local Amish population by specializing in hard to find "people-powered" items that the Amish utilize on a daily basis. They've added on and expanded several times, yet parts of the original store are still there. They even added a Café a couple of years ago. They also added on and changed the entrance. And now, they've done it again! They just added on and opened up another 3,500 square feet of space dedicated to food preservation items.
If you've never been to Lehman's you need to make time to stop by and you'll see why they say, "A piece of the past makes an excellent present!" Lehman's is located at One Lehman Circle, in Kidron. You may contact them at: 330-857-5757 Or, check out their website www.Lehmans.com for more information or to shop online. _________________________________________________________________ Tip of the MonthFishing for Steel(head)
Conneaut, Ohio (in Ashtabula County) is home to a nationally renown creek. Conneaut Creek is well known in fishing circles for its steelhead trout fishing. Each year, tens of thousands of yearling steelhead are stocked in the creek by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife. Fly fisherman come from far and near for the opportunity to "land a big one" and enjoy the flavor of fresh trout. Steelhead season in the creek runs from September through May. About mid April through mid May the fish head downstream to "summer" in Lake Erie. Come fall, they once again head upstream for spawning. So, there's still time to catch yours . . . before they all get away! _________________________________________________________________ Calendar of EventsMay Events: May 7 - 8 Mother's Day at Yeowza Resorts May 8 Vintage Tractor Show May 10 Steve Chupp Furniture Auction May 15 7th Annual Cruisin' for a Cure Car Show Lantern Tours May 22 Community Day Community Day Community Day May 19-23 Dennison Railroad Festival May 28-30 Canal Dover Festival May 30-31 Carefree Quilt Show May 31 Hocking Valley Scenic Railway Well, guess that's all for now - hope you find this news helpful and as exciting as we do.
