Experience Ohio Route 557

Ohio Route 557 may be short in distance but it is certainly long on experience.

We could actually call this the SR 557/SR 643/SR 93 trip because it includes a portion of State Routes 643 and 93 south of Sugarcreek - but that's too confusing!

State Route 557 begins just west of Berlin as it heads south off SR 39 and winds it way through the scenic Doughty Valley to Charm and then Farmerstown.

Below Farmerstown SR 557 joins SR 643 and ends at SR 93. From there, SR 93 heads south into Baltic.

Before you begin your "557 trip" you may want to spend the night in Berlin and then get an earlier start on down the road.

Regardless, just be sure to stop at Hershberger's Truck Patch & Bakery.

This a great family friendly place where the kids can experience a petting zoo or ride a pony.

The whole family can take a ride in a real Amish buggy or just grab some ice cream or fry pies. Be sure to check out their seasonal produce and homemade baked goods.

From there, you can head on down to Guggisberg Cheese where you'll sample some great cheese or even watch it being made if you make it there on weekdays between 8 and noon.

Head on down the road to Charm and you'll find one of my personal favorites - Keim Lumber! This is not your ordinary lumber store, it's an extraordinary shopping/dreaming experience.

You'll find real tools here - and we're talking the commercial and professional woodworking type tools.

Not into tools? Check out their kitchen and bathroom displays or browse the dozens of isles loaded with home improvement goodies.

Hungry? Grab a bite at The Carpenter's Café on the second floor of Keim Lumber. If you're ready for a bigger meal head over to Grandma's Homestead Restaurant. But, don't forget to stop by Charm Harness & Boot - a favorite of our daughters (the dreamy, horse-lover type)!

Next, you'll travel down Ohio Route 557 to Farmerstown. Are you an antique buff? Be sure to stop by Hershberger Antique Mall on your way. If you happen to be traveling on a Tuesday, you may be interested in the Farmerstown Livestock Auction. It starts at 12:30 p.m.

We also like to suggest a slight detour if you have time. Before Farmerstown, SR 557 intersects County Road 114. Just a mile or two north on CR 114 (3270 CR 114) you'll come to Farmerstown Broom & Book.

Here you will find the simple shop of an elderly Amish woman. She sells German and English books and also makes brooms by hand with the help of a young Amish lady apprentice.

Each broom is painstakingly made to the highest standard - and for a reasonable price. Want a great broom? Pick one up here!

After Ohio Route 557 merges with SR 643 it will end at SR 93. Take SR 93 south and be sure to leave enough time to tour around Baltic. Baltic is home to Steiner Cheese, the historic Baltic Mill and Miller's Dutch Kitch'n.

If you're interested in spending the night somewhere along this route check out the lodgings info for Charm and Baltic.
